When we listen to a melody’s beat, tone, and intensity it is no mystery that it can effect our emotion, memory, timing, language, along with a lot of other things. Different parts of the brain react to different types of music. For instance, the Broca’s area is activated by lyrics and the song itself, but other parts of the brain can may connect to that song associating it with past experiences. Music is one of the devices that can activate so many brain systems at once. They are now studying music to create new therapies to treat emotional disorders, such as; depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. PET brain scans were done while listening to music which revealed the music’s correlation to changes in activity in pleasure epicenters of the brain. Ultimately, music’s effect on the brian and emotion could one day answer long standing questions, like why music is so universal in all cultures. I am a global studies major and this relates closely to what I have learned in school. This article supports everything I have been taught about music. My teacher told us that music and rhythm were used to communicate before there was legitimate language and that we associate our language, experiences, feelings amongst other things through rhythms and beats which is found in all types of music.
